Tim's Notes: Axis Deer
Hunting Style: Bow hunting was my choice. You'll be hunting from tree stands or ground blinds like what you'd hunt from in Africa. Ambushing the deer at water or feeding locations. I liked spot and stalk too. The axis were tough that way but it was fun. They travel in herds thus there's lots of ears and eyes to fool. I saw water buffalo which would prefer to kill you than look at you. Also hogs, gators, black buck, and fallow, all of which you can hunt. It's set up on an Indian preserve so there's no tags or US rules to follow. I had a ball trying to spear a water buff. No luck but close. Rifle hunting is safari style. The deer are wild as a whitetail and just as smart. When you lay eyes on that first buck its awesome. They are cool to hunt but hard. Fortunately there's a pile of em. They rut in the summer and roar like a stag. You can rattle them in July during their rut. It's a great summer hunt for the worlds most beautiful deer. I go annually. As a side note their 100 % on Osceola Gobblers each year. Great place for a grand slam start! My daughter killed one with a bow, no blind and she's 11. This place rocks.
Weather: Its hot 60 degrees F to 100 degrees F and humid.
Camp: The lodge is a bed and breakfast where you stay with your guides. Very nice with all the amenities. Lots of deer mounts and well furnished for a lady as well. Cool and relaxing. Multiple species can be seen at night feeding in the yard outside the lodge window. My son Clint wanted to lay into them. He killed a big
gator.
Food: Full time cook. Hot breakfasts. Sack lunch in the stands if you hunt all day but usually we came in for the great hot lunches. Four course meals at night. Every meal was wild game which made it special.
Guides: Young and very competent guides. Very patient and overly willing to please the client. Open minded to any hunting styles. Super personalities. You'll come home with new friends. One of the guides actually refused to take a tip. That was a first.
Cost: $2200 for one buck. Pay as you kill. Several species available at various prices. A $500 deposit required to book your hunt. No kill no, trophy fee.
Success Rate: 99 percent. Their meat is second to none. Bring the meat home even if you have to have it shipped. Their hide makes an awsome rug as well.
Season Dates: April through November.
Location: 2 hours from Orlando Florida
